A Little Bit About Me

This is my 6th year teaching at the elementary school level. I have taught 6th Grade and K-5th Grade Reading. I recently completed my Masters Degree in Reading/ Language Arts and my Reading Specialist Credential this past June. Teaching is my passion! I am blessed to have a supportive husband and a beautiful three year old daughter.

First Grade Language Arts Curriculum

First grade students build phonemic awareness and phonics skills as they increase sound/symbol relationships. Instruction incorporates phonemic awareness and sound/symbol lessons. Shared reading and guided reading lessons in small groups expose students to a variety of reading strategies. Reading vocabulary is built in a way that will also foster a love of good literature. Guided reading groups allow students to work with other students that have similar reading needs as they move toward greater independence in reading. Writing instruction focuses on writing clear, complete sentences and logical stories that have a good beginning, middle and end.

Second Grade Language Arts Curriculum

Our reading program emphasizes the development of phonics, fluency, and comprehension strategies. In grammar, second graders learn to identify nouns, verbs, and adjectives and study sentence structure.  Second Graders will learn to write narrative and friendly letter writing with a focus on main idea and supporting details

Third Grade Language Arts Curriculum

Students in third grade acquire strategies that will increase their ability to read and comprehend fiction and non-fiction, including fairy tales, myths, fables, folktales and legends. The children build vocabulary (i.e. prefixes, suffixes, compound words, family words) and use comprehension strategies including predicting, summarizing, and making inferences and connections to text. Students draw from their own experiences as they learn to analyze the writing of others. Third graders learn to write a single paragraph with a topic sentence and supporting details. Small group instruction is used when students are engaged in Writer's Workshop and Guided Reading.

Fourth Grade Language Arts Curriculum

By the Fourth Grade, students are independent readers with backgrounds and phonics skills, so the emphasis is less on decoding and more on comprehension and application of reading skills. We work to increase reading vocabulary and to increase the enjoyment of reading. The areas we address include:

v      Analyzing characters, plot and setting

v      Drawing conclusions

v      Making predictions

v      Author’s purpose and point of view

v      Sequence of events

v      Summarizing

v      Inferences

v      Story comprehension

v      Main ideas and supporting details

v      Multiple-meaning words

Fifth Grade Language Arts Curriculum

In fifth grade Language Arts, students improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Through expository text, students study compare and contrast, cause and effect, literary devices, and themes. Students read a variety of styles including poetry, drama, folklore, legends, fables, myths, fairy tales, and fantasy. Students write narratives, persuasive essays, and research reports, with an emphasis on supporting evidence, voice, organization and word choice. A variety of resources will be used including novels, textbooks, short stories, newspapers, etc.  Emphasis will be on reading standards for word work and vocabulary, reading fluency, comprehension skills and strategies.

Literacy Links!

The websites linked below offer hours of enjoyment and opportunities to increase literacy skills, as well as offering an alternative to the daily reading of books. Please be sure you are monitoring and balancing your child's television, and electronic game use, with home reading. Did you know that if a child reads daily for 50-60 minutes, they will be exposed to close to 5,000,000 words per year? Exposure to vocabulary and the concepts found in books provide keys that will open many doors to future success for your child. Remember:  Readers Become Leaders!
