Celebrations throughout the liturgical year of the Church take many forms – daily Mass, Sacraments, devotions, and various other rites that flow from our Sunday celebration of the Eucharist as a community. Our liturgical life nourishes our religious faith, binding us to our heavenly Father and to each other.
As we engage in parish life, there will be times when we need to be ministered to by fellow parishioners, and other times when we bring our own unique gifts to share with others. St. Paul speaks about how the Spirit gives each and everyone of us special gifts - these gifts are called charisms. Everyone has received gifts from the Lord that were given for the good of the community. We encourage you to prayerfully consider how we can meet some of your needs and how God is calling you to meet the needs of others.
Young people from the Catholic School or the Parish School of Religion, can serve at our Lord’s Table, beginning in grade 5. As ushers and greeters we extend Christ’s love, warmth and hospitality to newcomers and parishioners arriving at St. Louise de Marillac Church for Mass. Ushers are men and women who assist with seating and facilitate the collection and communion aspects of Mass. Greeters are individuals and often entire families who join together with the Holy Spirit to welcome our community into our sacred place of worship. For many of us, we show up to church each Sunday and perform prayers and rituals that we have known since childhood. We stand, sit, and kneel. We make the sign of the cross. We recite “Holy, Holy, Holy”, “Lamb of God” and “Thanks be to God”. But do we really understand the significance of all that we are saying and doing in the liturgy? Today we are standing at a unique moment in the Church, as we prepare for the implementation of a new translation of the Mass, the Revised Roman Missal.
The Roman Missal is the book which contains not only the prayers we use for the Mass, but the rubrics, or directions for the priest. There have been articles, homilies and handouts on what this means for the church, and what it means for us as a parish when we gather each week to celebrate Mass. Many of you have begun asking questions and expressed concerns about what these changes mean. The new translation will be officially in use beginning November 27th, the first Sunday of Advent and the beginning of the Church's new liturgical year. Musical changes began Sunday, September 10th in preparation for the new liturgical changes. St. Louise is hosting educational workshops and distributing handouts that provide information regarding the upcoming changes.
While the essence of the Mass is not changing, the way it is celebrated will be noticeably different. We will need to learn new responses and new musical settings, as well as become accustomed to hearing the priest use liturgical phrases that are different from what we have heard for nearly forty years. The most notable change will come in the beginning of Mass, and continue throughout, when the priest (or deacon) says, "The Lord be with you." Our response will now be, "And with your spirit." There will also be changes, some very slight, in the other prayers we say, such as the Gloria, the Creed, and our acclamations.
The new Revised Missal is an opportunity to help us understand the significance of the prayers and rituals in the liturgy. The more we grasp the meaning of what we say and do in the Mass, the more we will be able to give ourselves to God in the liturgy and encounter him in these sacred mysteries. From 2000 years ago to today, God continues to summon His people, calling us into a deeper relationship with Him and His Church. As we are taken out of our routine, it is our prayer that this period of preparation and transition to the New Missal will not be merely mechanical - simply being trained to say new responses – but that it is sacred time of renewal and celebration of the very source and summit of our Catholic faith.
The Safeguard the Children program was established to create a safe environment for children and youth in all Catholic parish communities. All adults with any interaction with children are required to be fingerprinted - Livescan and to attend a 3 hour Virtus training session.
