century. At that time, Austria ruled over some parts of Italy, and Italian revolutionaries were trying to throw off that rule. Petty skirmishes eventually led to a declaration of war on Austria in 1848—and the Holy Father was caught in the middle.

Intinction Guidelines
I understand that the recent allowance of the distribution of the Precious Blood has raised a few questions. I would like to take a few moments to address one question in particular, regarding intinction, or the dipping of the host into the Precious Blood. There are very specific guidelines and traditions that set forth the parameters for intinction. One of our church documents, “Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion under Both Kinds in the Dioceses of the United States of
America”: states that “ Among the ways of ministering the Precious Blood as prescribed by the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, Communion from the chalice is generally the preferred form in the Latin Church…”
