Sacraments of Initiation

Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion – are called the sacraments of initiation because they are the first ones we celebrate chronologically, and invite us to a deeper faith walk as Catholic Christians.

Baptism:
The baptism of your child is a privileged moment for your entire family and we rejoice with you as we welcome them into the Catholic faith. In this sacrament, you affirm that you will raise your child in the Catholic faith and the community promises to assist you with that responsibility.

Infants and young children (under six years of age) are usually baptized in a group celebration. We assist parents and families in preparation for the Rite of Baptism by guiding them through the communal Baptism liturgy. The pastoral staff and baptismal team are ready to assist you and want to do all they can to make your child’s Baptism as special and as meaningful as possible. The Baptism Guidelines will be helpful in answering some of your initial questions. .

Families with children who are not baptized and are at least 6 years of age may enter them in regular Religious Education Classes to receive religious instruction and be with their peers. The child will begin this initiation process with family and godparents invited to walk the faith journey with them.  It is a 2 year journey leading to reception of the Sacrament of Baptism. The children are then invited to come back to Religious Education classes to continue their faith development as they grow in understanding of what it means to be catholic and have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Confirmation:
The Sacrament of Confirmation unites us more firmly with Christ.  It increases in us the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit – Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord.  It gives us the strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith.

Teens wishing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation, must be entering the ninth grade or be the minimum age of 14. Confirmation candidates must submit a completed application and be interviewed by the Confirmation Team along with a parent or guardian. Confirmation is a two year program for teens, that teaches and inspires them how to live an authentic Catholic faith life.

Candidates will learn how to become a fully initiated Catholic ready to live out their faith.  Please see the Confirmation Calendar for class dates and times. Contact the Faith Formation office at 626-332-5822 for additional details about the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Eucharist:
The celebration of the Eucharist is the center and the heart of Christian life for all God’s people.  As Catholics, we believe that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharistic elements of Bread and Wine (Holy Communion), as well as in the Word (the Scriptures proclaimed), the priest-celebrant, and the assembly.  We are blessed at St. Louise to have the Eucharist celebrated and available to us at daily Mass.

If you (or your children over seven years old) have not yet received this sacrament for the first time, please call the Parish Center at (626) 915-7873 and we will gladly help you take the first step to full communion with the Catholic Church.
